Tissue paper is normally made out of either recycled pulp or 100% virgin pulp or natural fibre. Get to know the differences so you know exactly what to get!
100% Virgin Pulp
Tissues made of this material are made from pure wood pulp. Therefore, it does not contain any bleaching ingredients or Optical Brightening Agents (OBA), making it safe to use on skin, including more sensitive skin areas such as the face.
Here are the other advantages of virgin pulp tissue:
- More hygienic because pure, natural pulp is used in the making of it.
- Feels softer to the touch
- High absorbency
Usage suggestions for virgin pulp tissue:
- Suitable to use on the skin, such as the face and mouth (after eating)
- To keep baby’s hygiene and cleanliness, etc
Recycled Pulp
This type of tissue is made of recycled pulp from cardboards, newspapers, and more. This type of tissue is said to be more environmentally friendly and economically priced. However, recycled tissue has its fair share of disadvantages, including the possibility of it containing traces of heavy metals, such as lead and mercury, which is harmful to the human body in the long run and can even cause illnesses like cancer.
Recycled tissue is normally brown in colour. Yet, some recycled tissue is white in colour because OBA or bleaching solutions are used in the making. Bleaching solutions can cause irritations and allergic reactions to people with sensitive skin.
Here are tips to buy recycled tissue:
- Pick recycled tissue that is brownish in colour to minimize the amount of OBA contained in the tissue.
- If you intend to use the recycled tissue for after-meal hygiene, ensure that the tissue you buy has been approved by the Indonesian Department of Health. This prevents you from buying recycled tissue with dangerous substances such as heavy metals.
Usage suggestions for recycled pulp tissue:
- To wipe dirty hands
- To clean object surfaces, such as tables
